IF: Return (Ritorno)

Three years ago, on 6th April 2009, when I left home the night of the earthquake, I thought it would be for just a few hours. I had not realized that my hometown had disappeared.

Tre anni fa, il 6 aprile 2009, quando ho lasciato la mia casa, la notte del terremoto, pensavo che saremmo ritornati dopo qualche ora. Non mi ero resa conto che la mia città non esisteva più.

Sizing

Before painting, the canvas needs to be sized by applying a protective coat in order to:
- stretch the canvas
- improve the adhesion of pigments
- enhance the color brightness
- protect the canvas from the natural acids in oil paints
- make the canvas smooth and easier to paint on.
Canvases can be sized by applying water soluble cementite (simple, quick and inexpensive) or rabbit glue+Bolognese chalk (classic method, more expensive and time-consuming).

Sizing with cementite.
Cementite can be bought in hardware stores.
Mix with water and use a large brush to paint several layers, by alternating horizontal and vertical strokes, taking care to not stop before the canvas' edge.
It is possible to add pigments (gouache or acrylics, no oils) to the sizing for special effects, or sand, to create texture.

Below, my first attempt at an oil painting (work in progress). Sand from the beach was added to the cementite, as well as some gouache, to obtain a textured and slightly coloured surface.
My teacher told me I should make as many mistakes as possible, to learn better, and I did it :) Fortunately, oils are quite forgiving (on the right, mistakes fixed).

L'imprimitura

Prima di dipingere, la tela va preparata. Tale preparazione si chiama imprimitura e serve a:
- tendere la tela
- favorire la tenuta dei pigmenti
- esaltare la brillantezza dei colori
- proteggere la tela dagli acidi naturalmente contenuti nei colori a olio
- facilitare l'esecuzione.

Puo' essere effettuata con cementite ad acqua (semplice, veloce ed economica) o con colla di coniglio e gesso di Bologna (metodo classico).

Metodo con cementite.
La cementite si acquista dal ferramenta.
Si allunga con acqua fino ad ottenere una pastella fluida e si passa sulla tela con un pennello in diversi strati, sia in senso orizzontale che in senso verticale, avendo cura di non fermarsi prima dei bordi.
Per ottenere effetti particolari si può aggiungere alla cementite del pigmento (tempera o acrilico, non olio perché non si miscelerebbe con l'acqua) oppure della sabbia per creare texture.
E' quanto è stato fatto nell'esempio riportato nella foto, il mio primo dipinto ad olio (ancora in progress, naturalmente). All'imprimitura sono stati aggiunti un po' di tempera e della sabbia raccolta sulla spiaggia di Pescara.
Il mio insegnante mi ha "ordinato" di commettere più errori possibile, in modo da imparare meglio, e l'ho preso in parola :) Ma c'è da dire che i colori ad olio sono clementi e permettono di correggersi... (v. foto a destra)

(It goes without saying that I am the only one responsible for what will be published here).

(Inutile precisare che sono l'unica responsabile di quanto verrà pubblicato qui).

Lesson 1 - 1a Lezione

At the end of the class, the teacher asked me to prepare some sketches, to apply the rules of composition. Among the three sketches I showed him, he chose the last one (which was my favourite too). I've added some notes to the sketch to show the correspondences and symmetries I used to create a balanced and hopefully pleasing composition.

Alla fine della lezione, l'insegnante mi ha chiesto di disegnare degli schizzi, applicando le regole della composizione. Fra i tre schizzi presentati, ha scelto l'ultimo (che era anche il mio preferito). Ho aggiungo al bozzetto delle note per mostrare le corrispondenze e le simmetrie che ho usato per creare una composizione equilibrata e sperabilmente gradevole.

Old me: "Oh, look at that advertisement: a drawing and painting course.... I'd like so much to take it... I always wanted to... But... I am still looking for a job... maybe I should save money and time... Who knows if the teacher is a good one? Is learning to paint really a priority right now? What if my children get sick and I can't go? Where shall I store all the paintings I'll paint? Anyway, I can always do it later... One day when all my problems are solved..."

New me: "Hallo? My name is Barbara. I would like to enroll in your drawing and painting course."

The course starts tomorrow.

Vecchia me stessa: "Oh, guarda quella pubblicità: un corso di disegno e pittura... Mi piacerebbe tanto seguirlo... E' sempre stato un mio desiderio... Ma.... Sto ancora cercando un lavoro... forse dovrei risparmiare tempo e denaro in questo momento... E poi chissà se l'insegnante è bravo... Imparare a dipingere è davvero una priorità in questo momento? E se i bambini si ammalano e non posso andare? E dove metterò tutti i quadri che dipingerò? E comunque posso sempre farlo dopo, in futuro... Un giorno, quando avrò risolto tutti i miei problemi....."

Nuova me stessa: "Pronto? Mi chiamo Barbara. Vorrei iscrivermi al corso di disegno e pittura."

Me too...torial (Tutorial anch'io)

A little Christmas origami tutorial, hoping you will forgive me for not posting these days. I am trying hard to stay on top of a lot of things, beautiful and not-so-beautiful. I must say I am learning a lot. I'll tell you :)
This Christmas tree was taught to me a long time ago. I like it very much for its simplicity and beauty, I hope you'll like it too. In my next post you'll see a couple ideas for using it.

Un piccolo tutorial origami natalizio, per farmi perdonare la mia assenza di questi giorni. Ce la sto mettendo tutta per gestire diverse cose, alcune belle, altre meno. Devo dire che sto imparando un sacco di cose... vi racconterò :)
Questo origami, che mi è stato insegnato tanto tempo fa e mi piace molto per la sua bellezza e semplicità, è stato anche ospite di una sessione di Social Crochet (andate a scoprire cos'è!). Spero che piaccia anche a voi. Nel prossimo post vedrete anche qualche idea per utilizzarlo.

I am currently following this online course.
During week 2 we were invited to find out our totem animal, a symbolic guide and source of power and protection on our journey.
Unexpectedly (or perhaps not), I discovered that my totem is the tiger. Quite interesting discovery, because until now I considered the tiger a symbol for the problems, difficulties and trials I am currently going through.
But what is even more interesting is what I found on the Internet about the tiger totem. This is long, but I want to post it because it is an almost perfect description of myself, right now.
"The Tiger is the symbol of darkness and the new Moon. When a Tiger totem enters your life, expect new adventures. It will awaken new passion and power.
Tigers are associated with water and have all the properties of the element of Water – healing, power through gentle flow, feminine energies.
The tiger is a solitary spirit, protecting its territory. In this aspect, you are a person who needs plenty of "space". You can feel suffocated easily by one who does not understand this. You are very loyal, loving and sensual, but must be with someone who really understands you.
The tiger is a nocturnal animal and gives those with the "spirit of the tiger" a special power during the night hours. Your creativity is enhanced during those hours.
Unlike most of the cat family, the tiger loves swimming and will often just lay in the water and enjoy it. The tiger spirit person has an affinity for water and often lives near the water or would like to. The water element is one of psychic ability and emotional elements. You can be overly sensitive and emotional, but if you call upon the power and knowledge of the tiger, you can control your life.

At the time in your life when the tiger spirit speaks, slow down and become deliberate in your choices. If you feel you are being selfish, that is probably for your own good. Everyone must learn to "do for themselves" before they can help others. The tiger can give you the strength and courage to do what is necessary and teach you not to cringe from actions that may cause pain, but must be done. Follow your instincts. The tiger is a great leader."

In questo periodo sto seguendo questo corso online.
Nella seconda settimana siamo stati invitati ad individuare il nostro animale totem, una guida simbolica e fonte di potere e protezione nel viaggio intrapreso.
Inaspettatamente (o forse no), ho scoperto che il mio totem è la tigre. Una scoperta piuttosto interessante, dato che fino ad ora avevo sempre considerato la tigre un simbolo dei problemi e delle difficoltà che sto attraversando.
Ma ancora più interessante è quanto ho trovato sulla rete riguardo al totem della tigre. E' lungo, ma voglio copiarlo ugualmente qui perché è una descrizione quasi perfetta di me, ora.
"La Tigre è il simbolo dell'oscurità e della luna nuova. Quando una tigre totem entra nella vostra vita, aspettatevi nuove avventure. Risveglierà nuove passioni ed energie.
Le tigri sono associate all'acqua e di questo elemento hanno tutte le proprietà: guarigione, energia attraverso un flusso gentile, energie femminili.
La tigre è uno spirito solitario, che protegge il proprio territorio. Sotto questo aspetto, siete una persona che ha bisogno di molto "spazio". Potete facilmente sentirvi soffocate da una persona che non riesce a comprenderlo. Siete leali, affettuosi e sensuali, ma dovete accompagnarvi a qualcuno che vi capisca realmente.
La tigre è un animale notturno e dona ai suoi protetti un potere speciale durante le ore notturne. E' proprio di notte che la vostra creatività raggiunge i suoi livelli più alti.
A differenza della maggior parte dei felini, la tigre ama nuotare e ama l'acqua. I suoi protetti hanno un'affinità con questo elemento e spesso vivono o amerebbero vivere vicino all'acqua. Questo elemento può rendervi ipersensibili ed emotivi, ma se vi affidate al potere e alla sapienza della tigre riuscirete ad avere il controllo della vostra vita.
Lo spirito della tigre è avventuroso, ama viaggiare, sperimentare nuove culture, imparare nuove filosofie, incontrare nuove persone mantenendo allo stesso tempo il proprio carattere "solitario". Tuttavia la tigre è fortemente legata ai suoi cuccioli. Lo spirito della tigre ha un forte senso materno, cresce i suoi cuccioli e insegna loro tutto ciò che sa finché essi rimangono nel suo territorio.
Le tigri cacciano in silenzio e lentamente. Questa abilità può essere utile da apprendere. Riflettete sempre con attenzione, non abbiate troppa fretta. Quando nella vostra vita sentite la voce dello spirito della tigre, rallentate e ponete attenzione nel compiere le vostre scelte. Se vi sembra di essere egoisti, probabilmente è per il vostro bene. Tutti dovrebbero imparare a prendersi cura di se stessi prima di poter aiutare gli altri. La tigre può darvi la forza e il coraggio per fare ciò che è necessario, anche se può causare dolore.
Seguite il vostro istinto. La tigre è una grande guida."
